Wondering what movie was the most profitable production in cinema history? Are the most profitable movies also on the most popular list? You will find out in our article!

Top grossing movies – the list

From time to time the world of cinema circulates information about turmoil in the list of the most profitable film productions. The list of films with the highest revenues is long, and the first two places are separated by a small difference. The highest-grossing films brought in profits of almost 2.8 billion US dollars. What films are at the top of the list of the most box office grossing films in cinema history? Answer below.

Avatar – the highest grossing film of all time

The first place in the category of the highest-grossing films since 2009 is held by James Cameron’s “Avatar”. This American sci-fi film achieved a revenue of $2,798,579,794. The work, which was awarded three Oscars (for best production design, best cinematography and best special effects), was watched in cinemas by about 100 million viewers.

Avengers: Endgame

The second place with a slight loss to the leader was taken by the 2019 film “Avengers: Endgame”. The film was directed by brothers Anthony and Joe Russo. “Avengers: Endgame” is an American fantasy action film with a revenue of $2,797,800,564.

Interestingly, for a while this film held the top spot on the list of the highest grossing films, but in March 2021, Avatar returned to theaters in China and its revenue increased enough to push “Avengers” into second place.

Third place on the list of highest-grossing films in cinema history goes to the winner of 11 Oscars. It’s James Cameron’s second film in the top three most box office grossing films.

“Titanic” is also the first film to cross the $1 billion revenue barrier. The film premiered in 1997 and was shown in theaters in the United States for two hundred and eighty-one days – the longest in cinema history!

The top box office grossing movies when adjusted for inflation

Ever wondered what a list of the top box office grossing movies would look like when adjusted for inflation? Well, there’s a lot going on there! First on this list is Gone with the Wind, the 1939 film that won 9 Oscars. The revenue from this film would have been $3,728,000,000 after accounting for changes in the value of money (registered revenue is $400,176,459)

“Gone with the Wind” gathered about 230 million viewers in theaters – for the record, “Avatar” was seen by about 100 million viewers. The difference is therefore huge and shows the scale of popularity of the adaptation of this novel.

The second place on the list of most profitable films after inflation is taken by “Titanic” (after conversion 3 272 000 000 dollars), and the third “Avatar” (revenue with inflation 3 230 000 000 dollars).

The magic barrier of $3 billion in revenue after inflation is also surpassed by 1977’s “Star Wars: Part IV – A New Hope” ($3,061,000,000 in inflation-adjusted revenue) and ranks as the fourth highest grossing film after inflation.
